What makes a great office design

When designing an office space you might want to brainstorm with colleagues first. Ask them what would make their working environment better , before going to the design team. Do they need more storage, a bigger breakout area, privacy areas, a larger kitchen? It might be the smallest of things like how the sun hits the computer screen, but these small details could make a huge difference to how productive you staff are.

At Leicester office furnishers, we are here to help improve all types of office spaces. Below are our top tips when re designing an office space.

Create more lighting.

Natural light is proven to make people happier, and so there’s nothing more important than a bright airy space. Reducing the need for lighting can reduce energy bills, so its a massive plus if you can create natural light in all areas of the office.

Use glass partitioning.

This follows on from the previous point, the use of glass partitioning is preferred to let light through to central parts of the office space. Adding glass to the office space can create zones for private meetings. It can also make the space feel modern and clean.

Open up the space.

This might mean removing current partitioning or changing your desk set up. Letting employers collaborate by sitting in certain groups in the office could be very beneficial to your business, you might need to change the desking from individual desks to bench desking. Bench desking is a great way to open up spaces, you can also add to them very easily if your company needs to expand.

Branding is key

Branding your office space is a big yes! It can be as big or small as you want, but we recommend to put your branding somewhere. You can add it to the glass partitioning, have it blown up on a wall behind your reception desk or add it to stationary. Where space is limited we’ve picked key colours out and created feature walls, or even used the branding on the welcome mat on entrance to the building.

Create breakout spaces

This is where you can let your creative juices flow. There’s no need for this area to be formal like the rest of your office, you can go bright, bold, and fun. Depending on the size of your office space the breakout area maybe a separate room or just a corner. Try and consider what you put in the area, a coffee/tea station, bar area, gaming zone, bar stools/tables for relaxed meetings. Remember that staff will still brainstorm on breaks with other employees. If there’s an escape from the desk to do this, it will pay off as a business as well.

Organisation is a must

Make sure your staff have the right storage for the work they carry out. For example the accounts department may need a lot more storage for paperwork. Filing cabinets would be a must for them. Do the staff in your office hot desk? In this case they may only to get their hands on stationary and a printer. Do employees use a lot of brochures, you may need a cupboard next to their desk or a bigger one central of the office. Do they need a desk to house one, three or more screens. Bare this in mind when planning the office space and how wide there desk area is.

Sit Stand desks

Sit stand desks are becoming more and more popular. You might think its a fad, or something nobody uses, but in all honesty they’re a great product! Sit stand desks improve productivity and posture in the workplace. We’ve noticed all professions are using it, even the doctors surgery! Pair the sit stand desks with ergonomic mats, and chairs and you could see a decline on people complaining of back aches and pains, headaches and tiredness.

Add plants

If you walked into our office space and saw how many plants we’d got in a small space you maybe surprised. Plants bring the outside in and make the space feel more like home, making staff relaxed and comfortable. Designate one person to water them and your sorted.

Invest in good quality furniture

Really consider the budget for furniture early on in the design process. Of course you can get cheap furniture, but it might fail you a year or two down the line, and also…..look cheap. The last thing you want is staff complaining that their cupboard door has fallen off, or chair is uncomfortable so they’re off sick with back pain. Speak to a furniture specialist like ourselves to budget plan.

Finishing touches

Like before plants are a great finishing touch to an office. Blank wall spaces may benefit from pieces of art. Mirrors can make small rooms feel larger, and rugs can make formal spaces feel more homely.
